Isabel Pantoja, the darling and diva of the Spanish popular music scene graced Torrevieja’s Antonio Soria Park on Saturday evening. More than two thousand spectators, of all ages, from under 10’s to great grandparents, attend the first concert that Pantoja has performed in the city.

The 11.00pm start may have been a little late for many, but the area surrounding the park was full of activity and swarmed with people from about 9.00pm in anticipation of seeing one of Spain’s certified superstars of music.

She appeared on stage to rapturous applause and dozens of fans ran to the barriers to try and capture a souvenir photo of their favourite artist, throwing flowers, showing her paintings that they had done of her and generating a sense of warmth towards the singer. Accompanied by an orchestra, music director and back up singers, Isabel performed for almost two hours, singing her best known and loved repertoire that she has etched into Spanish culture over the last 30 or so years.

She worked the audience well by involving them on many occasions to sing along with her and participate in the choruses of her songs. Looking thinner than ever and dressed for the occasion in three outfits that were simple and austere, rather than the flash Flamenco dresses she is known for, she looked and sounded every part of the professional that she is.

After the concert, Isabel Pantoja, was presented by a traditional Torrevieja Salt Boat by the city’s councilor of culture, and Isabel told those gathered that she was excited and grateful to have been given the opportunity to perform in Torrevieja.
